Birthday cake in Florence, Italy by L'Arte Della Torta di Melanie Secciani

Birthday cake in Florence, Italy by L’Arte Della Torta di Melanie Secciani

Last years intern Emily Kelley created this awesome birthday cake for the toughest clients ever – my kids. Our three boys wanted a birthday cake that combined the Roman Colosseum, Speckles the Dinosaur, the color blue, stars and all their fish.

Since their my kids, and only get 1 tiered cake a year (birthdays are really close together) they know cake and expectations are high.

Not a challenge at all???

The sculpted sugar details on this birthday cake are just so fantastic – from Abby (the snowflake eel) slinking around the bottom of the cake, Splitter (the lunar wrasse), Flash (the clownfish) and Lightning (the damsel) swimming on the tiers. Not to mention the spot-on Speckles.

And of course, since it’s L’Arte Della Torta, you know that colosseum is all carved cake.

The cake was chocolate fudge with cherries and chocolate mousse. As pictured serves 50.

And the boys vote  –  “Best Birthday Cake Ever”
